Digital Photography First Semester

The slide show you are about to view is comprised of a compilation of digital photographs from my photography students. Every photo is from the first semester, and each photo is a student’s response to one of the following art problems:

Making the ordinary and everyday, beautiful.
Art informs the way we see the world around us. At its best, art forces us to stop and observe the sacred and beautiful in ways we normally can’t and wouldn’t otherwise. The introductory assignment for this class will challenge students to find, or make beautiful, everyday “objects.” These objects could range from a pile of trash to a person they see every day. It will be up to the student to change our perception of these everyday objects, by uniquely capturing them through as series of digital photographs.

If you were struck blind today
This problem is similar to one given in graphic design. Students are asked to think about what image they would capture with their camera, if that image was to be the last image that they would be able to see. Going deeper into the assignment, one could say that the photographic answer to this assignment would also answer the question: If you were to go blind today, what is the last image you would leave world with so that they could see and understand your view of the world?

Commemoration
Students will be asked to recognize, through a series of photos, someone whom they wish to commemorate. More specifically, they will be asked to make these photographs in light of the Xaverian motto that we find God working and find the sacred in the everyday, ordinary, unspectacular events in life. Students will go out in search of these events and someone doing them, in order to capture those moments and bring them into our awareness.

Taking pictures of God
This assignment acknowledges that everyone has their own understanding and image of God and what that means to them. Students will have to present a series of photos that depict to the rest of us, how they view God. The point of the assignment is to challenge the students as to what THEIR PARTICULAR and personal understanding and image of God is, not what they have been shown or told all their lives.

I encourage you to leave comments, suggestions, etc. so that I might share them with my students.
