Mount St. Joseph is proud to field JV and Varsity Swimming
and Diving Teams as part of the winter sports program. The teams compete in
the MIAA "A" conference against Loyola, Calvert Hall, McDonogh, Gilman, and Severn
(JV). Swimmers and divers who meet
qualifying standards compete in the National Catholic High School
Championships at Villanova University (Villanova, PA) and in the Eastern
Interscholastic Championships ("Easterns") at LaSalle University (Philadelphia, PA).
The MSJ Swimming & Diving program has done well in the past
few years: The 2005 Varsity Team finished 2nd in the MIAA, and an
impressive 3rd at the National Catholics; the team recorded four school
records on the season. The 2006 Varsity team finished 3rd in the MIAA.
The JV Swim team won the MIAA Championship meet in both 2005 and 2006; this
past season, the JV Gaels were undefeated in all competitions.
The MSJ Swim teams practice and host home meets at Catonsville Community
College’s pool. Some swimmers practice primarily with the US Swimming or
YMCA teams to which they have made extended commitments; these athletes are
able to make MSJ High School competitions a demanding and fun part of their
Many MSJ swimmers and divers continue their athletic career at the
collegiate level; alumni have recently competed at schools including the
University of Maryland (College Park), UMBC,
James Madison University, Towson University, the United States Coast Guard
Academy, Villanova University, and Emory University. Tommy Hannan, MSJ
alumnus (’98), swam at the NCAA’s #1 program at the University of Texas.
Tommy is an Olympic Gold Medalist (Sydney 2000).
